Creating 3D Sets for Backgrounds – A Behind-the-Scenes Look


Hello everyone, this is Studio Wasp!

For the original version of Red Spider: Vengeance, we relied on "character sprites" and processed actual photos taken in Hong Kong and various indoor locations for our backgrounds.
This approach served its purpose, but for the remastered version, we're taking things a step further.

① Original vs. Remastered Backgrounds:
As you can see in the image below, the original game utilized 2D backgrounds derived from photographs.
For the remastered version, these backgrounds have been visually enhanced, and we're also creating entirely new 3D sets for specific scenes to offer greater visual depth and dynamism.

While some scenes in the remaster will feature 3D avatars combined with 2D backgrounds, a significant portion of the game will now utilize these newly created 3D sets.

② Early 3D Set Development:
The creation of these 3D environments is a meticulous process. The image below shows examples of early stages in developing 3D sets, including a recreation of Hong Kong's Star Ferry interior and the exterior of a mansion that will appear in the game.


As is common with many visual novel creators, Studio Wasp operates as a one-person team. I'm Kelly, the person writing this devlog, and I'm responsible for the story, graphics, and programming.

One of the major benefits of creating 3D sets is the flexibility it offers.
It allows us to render shots from complex angles and easily create multiple "cuts" within a moving scene, significantly increasing the visual variety and dynamism.
If I were working with another person solely responsible for rendering, this kind of rapid iteration wouldn't be as straightforward to request.

③ In-Game Scene with 3D Set:
The result of implementing these 3D sets can be seen in the following in-game screenshot.
The environment now has a tangible presence, which we believe enhances the overall immersion for the player.


However, it's also a considerable challenge for a single person to create all the visuals for every scene.
This is why I've been dedicating the past several months to building these 3D environments.
It's a labor of love, and I believe the results will greatly enhance the player's immersion.
