Making a Full-Voice Visual Novel
Hello everyone, this is Studio Wasp!
Last time, I mentioned that I handle almost all the development tasks by myself. However, I obviously can't voice over 150+ characters alone. I also have absolutely no acting experience, so recording the voices myself was out of the question from the start.
Because of this, I never originally planned to make a full-voice game. But then, I suddenly received a proposal from a group that performs "voice dramas" online. They offered to record and provide the voice files for free if I would just handle the integration. Their reason was simply that they wanted more opportunities to act.
Though surprised, I accepted their offer. I provided them with the character settings and scenario, and asked them to handle the casting… but that's where the difficulties began. Although they held a large-scale audition, they barely gave the selected voice actors the scenario.
This became apparent a year later, on the deadline they set for submitting the voice files. Less than half of the voices were submitted, and I couldn't even contact over half of the cast members. The few I managed to reach told me they hadn't received the scenario, so they couldn't do anything, and assumed the project had fallen through.
I considered giving up on making the game full-voice. However, the voice actor for the protagonist, Shishamo-san, had meticulously delivered a huge volume of dialogue files. I also didn't want to waste the efforts of the few other people who had submitted their work. Furthermore, I didn't want to undermine studio wasp's reputation.
Reluctantly, I severed ties with that group and started searching for the missing cast members myself. I also handled all the audio editing, cutting, and integration of the submitted voice files alone.
The Journey of Casting and Re-recording
The "Red Spider" series features over 150 characters, including extras, but I simply couldn't find that many voice actors. I was then taught about "doubling," where one person voices multiple characters, and with that approach, I successfully managed to gather all the voices for the entire series.
Even so, many people became unreachable partway through the series, and I ended up coordinating with over 60 voice actors. As a result, half of the main cast of "Red Spider" had different voice actors between the first and third installments.
This was a significant regret for me. So, for this remastered version, I asked the voice actors from the third installment to re-record their lines for the other series, and I also searched for new voice actors who could record for all installments. Thanks to these efforts, I finally have a clear path to unifying the cast throughout the entire series.
By the way, the total recording time for the voices across all five series is 31.8 hours and 24,000 lines of dialogue. Integrating this many voice files alone was an incredibly challenging task. For this remastered version, I replaced voices for 4 characters, which amounts to about 700 lines and 1 hour of audio.
