Red Spider: From Otome Game to Unique Adventure

Hello everyone, this is Studio Wasp!

Red Spider was initially planned as an otome game. At the time, most otome games featured heroines who were protected and supported their partners. I felt a lack of something more in that dynamic. Often, the partners' behavior left a lot to be desired, making me wonder, "Why do I have to play this game just to end up with this kind of person?"

I wanted to create an otome game free from that kind of stress. On top of that, there was very little female presence in Hong Kong noir films back then, so I also had a strong desire to see women taking active roles in a noir setting.

So, I started developing the game based on the core concept from the Hong Kong film "The Mission"—where bodyguards are hired to protect the wife of a triad boss. Once I set the heroine as a former assassin, she suddenly declared that she herself would take over as the head of the organization.

The Story Unfolds in a "Virtual Studio in My Mind"

The Red Spider series doesn't follow the typical script-first approach, much like the production process of some Hong Kong films. Instead, we develop the story, character art, and backgrounds all in parallel. This means even I don't know how the story will end until it's finished!

It's like positioning characters in a virtual studio in my mind, letting them move freely, and then expressing their actions through text and visuals. When the heroine, Yvet, declared, "I will inherit the Red Flower Society," I was surprised. And when she pulled out the Dragon Seal, the item that would legitimize her claim, I was truly excited.

Sometimes, letting the characters move freely even led to Yvet and her route partner committing a lover's suicide, which made me scramble to request a retake and change the development!

From that point on, as the characters continued to act on their own, it became clear that Yvet was primarily driven by a desire for revenge and had little interest in romance. The story began to diverge significantly from what you'd expect in an otome game.

Evolving Beyond Otome: A Strong Heroine's Adventure

While the structure of having different partners depending on the route technically fell within the otome game genre, the romance elements became quite thin, and the violence became very intense. Ultimately, we decided to drop the "otome game" label.

As a result, I believe Red Spider has become a highly original work: an adventure story with a female protagonist. It's been 11 years since the original production, yet I still rarely encounter heroines as strong and cool as Yvet.

If you love strong heroines, this is definitely a game for you! Dive into the world of Red Spider and experience it for yourself.
